Well, the big day finally arrived and I watched Las Vegas fade into the horizon behind me. I left about 9:30.
I was into Arizona and Utah before long.

Eventually, I stopped outside Cove Fort for lunch. As I pulled away, Sheriff Elmer Fudd said I could go to I-70, but couldn’t stop anywhere along the way. The fires were apparently getting close. Before pulling off I-15 I passed by some areas where the fires had already passed. There was one point where the trees on the side of the road were in flames.
The rest of Utah was really pretty:
Colorado had some cool tunnels. I stopped in Grand Junction. They must have had 70mph winds there – it was awful. I regret that I didn’t get any pictures up near Vail. With the river and the train running through those valleys, it reminded me of the train ride to Zurich from Venice. Well, maybe one of them turned out:

I’m staying in Golden, CO tonight. I’m just on the edge of town, so I couldn’t get a sense of it. So far, Colorado seems to combine the hippies of Lake Tahoe with the weirdos in Park City.
