Somewhere in Sussex County, Delaware I came across this scene. What was I doing in Sussex County, Delaware?
PUNKIN CHUNKIN 2
For the unitiated, Punkin Chunkin is just what it sounds like: throwing pumpkins. I think it started with some drunk guys in a field. That first year they got 8 feet or something. Next year might have been better when they added the ‘gloved’ category. The current record now? 4,400 feet. The honor belongs to “Second Amendment” – a massive contender in the Adult Air Canon division. Official results and more about the competition are available on their website.
I really can’t explain what goes on there. Pumpkins are hurled thousands of feet into an empty corn field by what amount to adult erector sets. And the crowd… oh, the sweet, sweet crowd. The people are mostly from surrounding areas and use the event as an excuse to drink. I saw a fight between two grown (read: 50+) women. And of course, the pumpkin head above. It’s a fantastic event, and I hope to go again next year. I’ll just be sure not to stand behind the machines – don’t want to become a victim.
Here’s a video I took of a machine called “Bad to the Bone.” Make sure you have your sound on.
Here are some others:
Couple smaller ones:
Here’s an air cannon. Unreal.
(Shout outs: Joni and Rachel, who were cool enough to come)
