Kite Karnage

March 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments

This past weekend was the DC Kite Festival. I wasn’t sure what to expect, so next year I’ll know to bring my own kite.
People were flying their kites all around the Washington Monument:

A master kite builder from China disassembled this beast, put it into luggage, came to DC, then reassembled it:

Then they partially got it [...]

Life Takes Visa Propaganda

March 16th, 2008 · 4 Comments

The Visa Version:
There’s a crowded restaurant at lunch. Choreographed masses spin with loaded trays. Lunch-goers approach the register, present a magic Visa card, a quick swipe, the card is handed back and they walk away. Some poor clod gets to the counter and tries to pay with cash - the dance is brought to a [...]

STT -> JFK -> ???

March 9th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Don’t arrive at the St. Thomas airport any earlier than you have to. There’s nothing there except a giant, hot room full of irritated travelers. “The flight to Philadelphia scheduled for 5pm will now be departing at 10:35pm.” I was glad that our plane was only arriving to St. Thomas a few minutes late. Their [...]

March 9th, 2008 · No Comments

With checkout at noon and my flight at six, I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. I decided to take my chances with the taxis and head into town. I talk to the front desk about the best way to do it. Basically they said walk down the road in the direction I want [...]

This morning I wanted to go into town. The hotel has a [...]

St. Thomas - Day 1

March 5th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I left Puerto Rico this morning and flew to St. Thomas. The flight may have been as close as I’ll get to a charter:

It was a short flight, and we passed over a few other islands.

The view from my hotel room:

I spent today in the sun. I think tomorrow I’ll head into town.

Carbonated Breakfast

March 4th, 2008 · 1 Comment

There was an obscurely labeled button on the soda machine on my floor. Turns out, it was this:

I’ve had malta before. If you haven’t, and were able to read the “non alcoholic” on the can and wondered why, here are the facts:
Ingredients: Water, malted barley, sugar, hops, carbon dioxide.
But here’s all you need to know: [...]

Puerto Rico - Days 1 & 2

March 4th, 2008 · 4 Comments

¡Hola de Puerto Rico! I arrived yesterday and didn’t get to my hotel until about 7. So I don’t have much to show for day one. I did find a place to eat that served local food - fantastic. And most importantly - it’s warm!
I decided this morning to see what Old San Juan was [...]
