This past weekend was the DC Kite Festival. I wasn’t sure what to expect, so next year I’ll know to bring my own kite.
People were flying their kites all around the Washington Monument:
A master kite builder from China disassembled this beast, put it into luggage, came to DC, then reassembled it:
Then they partially got it off the ground:
I think the best kite of the day might have been these legs:
Anyone can fly a kite. We went to see a no-holds-barred, down-and-dirty OCTAGON OF KITE FIGHTS TO THE DEATH. These prize fighters were pretty big. The multi-colored turtle was 6′ tall, weighed in at 4 stone and its special weapon was: slow-but-steady-stamina-of-doom.
Actually it was a real loser. Competitors in the ready position (of doom):
Once launched, the announcer gave them five seconds.. then “ENGAGE”:
After 3 rounds, Smithsonian and Bike Rack were tied. Watch the video below of the sudden death match. Of doom.
And then we saw the cherry blossoms, not fully in bloom yet:

That looks like fun. I especially like the cherry blossoms. Do they smell nice too? I want to see that someday. Next time you need to enter a kite Derek. Better start making it now.
That kite festival would be so fun to photograph.
